Why now?

Because educating ourselves is the key to regaining the confidence we need to go forward.

In 2022, 38% of Spanish people confirmed that they don’t trust the news they read.

In Spain, we’re only interested in reading news that matches our own opinions. Thus, the situation has started to become very worrying. According to Reuters 2022 Digital News Report, we ranked 2nd place as one of the countries that only consumes news that fits our views.

Because statistics for digital device users aged between 11 and 16 are extremely worrying.

More than half of these users cannot tell the difference between real and fake news.

92.1% think they can distinguish fact from opinion, but studies show that 27% are wrong and confuse the two.

Because as of 2022, media competency now has a place in the classroom.

Media skills, information processing and digital content creation are just some of the new competencies that students and teachers should be developing, according to the new Spanish education law LOMLOE (30 March 2022) and the EU’s new Digital Competences Framework.

Because it’s a requirement by law. The new Ley General de Comunicación Audiovisual (LGCA) law was passed in Spain in July 2022. Article 10 of the law states that all television broadcasters and video-sharing platforms must include measures to improve media literacy.

Both the European Directive that was passed in 2018 and the conclusions reached by the European Council in 2020 have been implemented in Spain.

Because large platforms (Google, Meta, TikTok, Twitter, etc.) have realised that it’s necessary and are now implementing training programmes, projects and funding into their strategic plans. These measures are specifically aimed at developing the media, information and digital literacy skills that are needed to keep up with an even more connected and complex world.

Because every citizen should know how to critically and effectively interpret and engage with any media content or service. Only this way can we exercise our right to be informed and to create, consume and share our own ideas as responsible citizens.
